Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION

Q What is the purpose of this project?
A . The purpose of this project is to provide a safer experience for pedestrians along the West Fuqua corridor between the City Limits (west of Fondren Road) and Bazel Brook Drive.

Q What is going to be replaced/installed in this project?
A. The project will replace all pavement, traffic signals, and pedestrian crossing systems at the intersections of West Fuqua Road and 1) Fondren Road, 2) Hillcroft Street, 3) Blueridge Road, and 4) Chimney Rock Road.

The project will also install continuous sidewalks on both sides of West Fuqua from the City Limits (west of Fondren Road) to Bazel Brook Drive. Where there is no sidewalk existing, the project will construct a new sidewalk. Where there is an existing sidewalk, the project will replace it unless the sidewalk was constructed within the last two years. The total length of the sidewalk to be constructed is 13,810 linear feet.

The project will also reconstruct certain driveways and relocate several fire hydrants.

Finally, three damaged and unhealthy trees will be removed.

Q How long is this project going to take to complete?
A. The construction contract anticipates the project will take about 8 months to complete.

SIDEWALKS, TREES & LIGHTING

Q Will there be Street Light Poles installed?
A. The only new street lighting will be at the intersections of West Fuqua with Fondren Road, Hillcroft Street, Blueridge Road, and Chimney Rock Road.

Q What trees are being removed?
A The Tree Protection Plan identifies the trees to be removed, which includes the removal of diseased or dying trees. The City of Houston identifies trees that can be preserved on a case-by-case basis.

CONSTRUCTION

Q At some point, will my utilities be affected?
A. To construct the new sidewalk, twenty-six (26) water meters will need to be moved.  Property owners will be notified in advance of water service interruptions.

Q Will this project cause traffic/mobility issues (lane closures, increase of trucks in the area, etc.)?
A.There will be lane closures required to construct the new pavement at the intersections of West Fuqua with Fondren Road, Hillcroft Street, Blueridge Road, and Chimney Rock Road.  Trucks will be required to pour concrete and deliver large items for construction.    Residents will also notice Flagmen periodically directing traffic from one side of West Fuqua to the other.  We will mitigate the anticipated traffic and mobility issues with the Traffic Control Plan and communication between the City, Contractor, Engineer, and Community.

Q Are they going to dig up the front area or just the street?
For this project, digging in the street will be at the intersections of West Fuqua with Fondren Road, Hillcroft Street, Blueridge Road, and Chimney Rock Road.  In these intersections, all the existing pavement will be removed and replaced.

Digging will also occur where:

1.    Existing sidewalk is being removed and replaced

2.    New sidewalk is being constructed

3.    Driveways are being removed and replaced
