Why This Project Matters

1. Rebuilds the neighborhood streets from the ground up
The Northside High School Area Drainage and Paving project fully reconstructs the local drainage system and connected streets—new stormwater, concrete paving, curbs, sidewalks, driveways, and underground utilities delivered through two subprojects in District H. It’s a full rebuild, not a band-aid.

2. Cuts flood risk where students actually live and walk
The City’s own justification flags this project as addressing a high-priority drainage need identified through its formal planning and prioritization process—aimed at reducing ponding in the street and the risk of structural flooding in the neighborhood around Northside High.

3. Makes daily trips safer and more predictable
New sidewalks, driveways, and upgraded paving give students, families, METRO riders, and neighbors a safer, more reliable way to get to school, work, church, and local businesses—without having to wade through standing water every time it storms.

4. Backed by serious, long-term investment
The project carries roughly $18.2 million in programmed funding in the City’s 2025–2029 Capital Improvement Plan, and a construction package estimated at nearly $40 million was slated for advertisement in early 2025—real money aimed squarely at a working-class neighborhood, not a cosmetic upgrade somewhere else.

5. Coordinated with the County for better results
Harris County has also acted to support storm drainage improvements in the Northside High School area north of downtown, tying City and County efforts together so the work is more effective and less piecemeal.
