Why This Project Matters

The West Belt Railroad Grade Separation Project will make rail crossings safer and neighborhoods quieter while improving traffic flow through East Downtown and the Greater East End. Here's why it matters:

1. Improves Safety at Rail Crossings
The project will build three new grade-separated crossings—where roads go over or under the tracks—and permanently close four street-level (at-grade) crossings. This eliminates dangerous conflict points between trains and vehicles, reducing the risk of collisions.

2. Reduces Traffic Delays and Improves Mobility
By removing six at-grade crossings along the West Belt Subdivision, the project will help ease traffic congestion caused by passing trains. This means faster, more reliable travel for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians in the area.

3. Lowers Noise and Air Pollution
Creating a sealed freight rail corridor will reduce the need for trains to blow horns at crossings and limit vehicle idling time. This leads to lower noise levels and reduced vehicle emissions—improving air quality for nearby communities.

4. Supports Regional Connectivity
The 9-mile West Belt Subdivision is a major freight rail line between East Downtown and the Greater East End. Upgrades to this corridor benefit not just local neighborhoods, but also the broader Houston region’s transportation system.
