1. Moves flow to a modern regional hub
This project builds more than 10,000 feet of 36-inch gravity sewer to carry wastewater from the Imperial Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Northgate Regional Lift Station. It’s part of Houston’s larger plan to shift flows into regional facilities instead of many smaller plants.
2. Allows an aging plant to be retired
By diverting flow, the city can decommission the Imperial Valley WWTP, an older facility that was never designed for today’s growth and regulatory expectations. Consolidating treatment at newer, higher-capacity facilities improves how wastewater is handled every single day.
3. Improves reliability and reduces overflows
A single, larger gravity line feeding a regional lift station is easier to operate and maintain than multiple smaller facilities and lines. This helps reduce the risk of backups and overflows during heavy rain and supports compliance with strict state and federal water quality standards.
4. Protects bayous and supports future growth
Stronger, consolidated infrastructure means cleaner discharges to local waterways and a system that can better handle new homes, businesses, and jobs in north Houston for decades to come—so the community can grow without outgrowing its pipes.
