Why This Project Matters

The EP Hill Park Detention Basin project is part of the HUD Community Development Block Grant – 2015 Disaster Recovery (DR15) program. This 7.3-acre project at 4800 Glory Land Drive combines vital stormwater improvements with new park amenities. Here’s why it matters:

1. Reduces Flooding
The construction of a stormwater detention basin helps manage heavy rainfall, lowering the risk of flooding in surrounding neighborhoods and protecting homes, streets, and public spaces.

2. Improves Drainage Systems
By capturing and slowing stormwater, the basin reduces strain on local drainage infrastructure, helping prevent backups, overflows, and erosion.

3. Enhances Public Spaces
Beyond flood mitigation, the project includes sidewalks, parking, tree preservation, landscaping, pedestrian lighting, irrigation, and other park amenities that improve the safety, beauty, and usability of the park.

4. Strengthens Community Resilience
As part of a federally funded disaster recovery program, the project represents a long-term investment in preparing the community for future storms and extreme weather.

5. Supports Quality of Life
The improvements not only make the area safer from flooding but also provide residents with a more enjoyable, accessible, and welcoming public park maintained by the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
