How exactly does this make things safer? That is a small passage that goes into one of Clutch's parking lot entrances. If converted to a one way think you will end up getting a lot of people going the wrong way and potentially accidents from people coming/leaving Clutch's parking lot. This doesn't seem like a necessary project to me but maybe I am missing something! Just offering my thoughts :)

Apologies for our delay in responding to your question.

The current lane configuration and width on this section of Detering St is not considered safe by City of Houston standards for two-way vehicle traffic. Allowing only one-way operation will prevent vehicles weaving around eachother on this narrow segment. This will also avoid damage on the roadway shoulder where the two-way traffic has created poor drainage conditions over time.

If this change is approved and implemented, the appropriate signage (per the Texas Manual on Uniformed Traffic Control Devices) will be installed to alert drivers of the proper lane of travel.

We have been informed of residents' concern with patrons exiting Clutch bar. At the public meeting for this proposal it was discussed and agreed upon by most of the residents present that they desired to have Detering Street changed to a one-way, southbound, to discourage patrons heading northbound out of this establishment.

I hope this helps answer your concern.

Will a compensating opposite one way street be determined? For example of this is one way southbound will Moy or another parallel street be turned one way northbound to balance traffic flow?

None asked over 2 years ago

At this time we are only evaluating the one-way conversion on Detering St. We do not expect an additional one-way conversion to be necessary as we expect the north or southbound traffic to travel on TC Jester Blvd, a major thoroughfare. However, a traffic study would be completed after this one-way intervention if mitigation becomes necessary. -VL

15 years ago the city was considering making Birdsall and Blossom in Rice Military one way streets. The neighborhood protesting it and it was dropped. The answer to our parking in Rice Military was for the City to put up no parking signs all over the neighborhood. The simple answer to our parking problems in Rice Military is to stop homeowners to put boulders on City Right of way between the street and the city right of way next to the open drainage ditches. Cars would be able to park in the city right of way and stay off the street. The traffic would flow better. Why doesn't the city make the homeowners throughout the neighborhood remove the rocks and boulders in the city right of way?

If the road is less than 20 ft., parking is not allowed. But, if the road is over 20 ft., but less than 26 ft., then one side of the street can be restricted, and the other can provide on-street parking. Additionally, the City does notify owners to remove boulders, but many homeowners fail to comply. Homeowners are also notified that in the event of a crash involving the boulder, they are liable and will be held responsible.

How much will this cost the tax payers?

orbital517 asked over 2 years ago

The conversion of Detering to a one-way street will be a low cost to tax payers. The implementation would require street signs, and those will be installed by the Traffic Maintenance Group, which is in-house work.

    Why are you considering this?

jlreichek asked over 2 years ago

This consideration was based upon a citizen's request to improve both the safety and circulation on a narrow road.

Is the direction decided or is that still up for debate as part of this project?

Kyle Koontz asked over 2 years ago

The direction has not been decided yet--we are asking for input from people like you to help us make this decision. If you'd like to learn more, we are hosting a public meeting tomorrow night (10/14/2021) at 6PM CST. Here is the link to participate: https://bit.ly/3kQiiUU
