Is there a project to rehabilitate the stretch between Washington and I-10?
yoo_hoo asked 28 days agoThank You for contacting Engage Houston regarding your question. Currently there are no plans for rehabilitation on Shepherd/Durham between Washington and I-10. Please contact 3-1-1 to report any current issues with the roads condition.

Will Blossom St have a crosswalk or signalized assistance for crossing? Also will Shepherd/Durham have any barriers separating the bike lanes?
yoo_hoo asked 4 months agoThank you for your questions! Blossom Street will have a crosswalk, and Shepherd and Durham will have Buffers to separate the bike lanes. -

Hi. Can you address the issue with the heavy load trucks going through neighborhood streets again (fowler, parker, patterson, etc) ? I submitted this question last year and you guys responded quickly to address it and we very much appreciated it. We noticed recently those truck drivers starting to use our small neighborhood streets again which cause a lot of noise, unsafe condition for kids/dogs, and damaging the streets (cracks/potholes). Today is especially bad as the trucks have been buzzing down our streets all day since 7am. those trucks should avoid neighborhood streets and just use Washington and Shepherd. Please ask construction manager/trucking manager to address this concern.
magnoliagroveresident asked 8 months agoHowdy Neighbor! The contractor has to perform work activities on the cross streets between Shepherd Dr and Parker St starting from Dickson St right up to Washington Ave, for installing the storm and sanitary sewers, placing lime stabilized subgrade, and paving with concrete or asphalt. To perform these activities the Contractor has to excavate and move the excavated material to the laydown yard and bring material to the site. These load trucks may have to move through Parker St or the other smaller side streets, with the intersection of these streets at Shepherd Dr not being accessible, due to the construction activities at times. At present Dickson and Lillian streets are closed at Shepherd Dr, perforce the Contractor has to move the loaded vehicles on the smaller streets. However the Inspector has asked the Contractor to minimize the movement of the construction equipment/load trucks and if possible to avoid using the smaller side streets for moving the loaded trucks between the work site and the laydown yard.

Will there be a traffic light installed at Dickson St & Durham/Shepard? This is a dangerous intersection, with traffic accidents happening very frequently. There is a crosswalk on Dickson but it isn't safe due to high speeds on Durham/Shepard.
jules2727 asked over 1 year agoThank you for your question. There will not be a traffic signal at the Shepherd/Durham/Dickson intersection. There will be a new crosswalk that will assist in addressing safety concerns.

The City of Houston is responsible for Shepherd Durham reconstruction from Dickson to Washington and Memorial Heights TIRZ 5 is responsible for Shepherd Durham reconstruction from I10 to 610. Who will be responsible for the reconstruction of Shepherd & Durham from Washington to I10 between the two projects? I appreciate your help!
ChrisH. asked over 1 year agoThe City has recently completed a study for the section of the roadway between the two projects (from I-10 to Washington) to connect them. However, at this moment there are no programmed funds for the design and construction of the project. The City is continuing to explore funding opportunities/sources for it.

I know it would add a bit to of cost to this project but I think putting in a physical barrier to the bike lane in addition to the buffer zone would improve safety significantly, people are often going down this street at speeds of 40mph+, those kind of speeds don't mix well with bicycles I feel. thank you for your time
ilia.lachinov asked over 1 year agoHPW shares your interest in making bikeways as safe and comfortable as possible. As projects move from planning through design and ultimately implementation, design standards frequently evolve, and HPW works hard to incorporate updated design standards whenever possible. Bikeway designs, in particular, have evolved substantially in Houston as national and international best practices are adopted and accepted into local design standards. In this case, this section of Shepherd/Durham was designed and budgeted several years before physically separated bikeways were common practice in Houston. Modifying the design at this point would require substantial changes to the roadway design and construction budgets and therefore cannot be accommodated at this time. Future improvements to the bikeway may be possible with a separate project.

As you may know, the TIRZ is rebuilding Shepherd/Durham from 610 to I-10 and will be adding bike lanes which are physically separated from the street. It makes no sense for the city to put in bike lanes on Shepherd/Durham from I-10 to Memorial which are unprotected. Cyclists do not use unprotected bikes lanes and drivers do not respect them. It's a terrible use of scarce transportation dollars to put in an unprotected bike lane. These bike lanes should be contiguously the same to provide safe connections beyond the Heights. Let's see what we can do to fix this!

Why does the sign on Shepherd say the project costs $10 MM when this site says $12 MM? Why does the sign not even mention bike lanes or that a full lane is being lost?
Magnoliagrove asked over 1 year agoThank you for your question. The budget allocated for the Shepherd and Durham project was $12,023,470. 10.3 million is the bid submitted and accepted from the contractor to complete construction. Unfortunately, all details within the scope of the project mostly will not fit on the signage. The public engagement team is tasked with hosting public meetings to engage with the community regarding the improvements to their neighborhood. Please visit the project webpage at www.engagehouston.org/shepherdanddurham for more information and there you also find the recording of the community meeting hosted on July 29, 2021.

Regarding my question on reducing the lanes from 4 to 3: So your answer means, essentially, that the COH might adjust the Feagan light if there's too much congestion. Correct? There are no other lights along this stretch. Or maybe the light at Washington will be adjusted? Thanks, Michelle
mwolpert asked over 1 year agoWe anticipate improving the level of service at the signalized intersections will also improve mobility for vehicular traffic.

Could you clarify if the buffer is physically separated from the road? In the diagrams there is something in the buffer which appears to be a physical barrier. Is this true and if so, what is it?
Kevin asked over 1 year agoThere will be striping and not a physical barrier between the vehicular lanes of traffic and bicycle lanes.
