DETAILS We are evaluating a permanent closure of Lawndale St. at the UPRR tracks.
HPW is evaluating a permanent closure of Lawndale St at the UPRR tracks. The underpass is located around the 9800 block of Lawndale St, between Goodyear Dr and Allen Genoa Rd. The closure was triggered by substandard vertical clearance, an inadequate storm drain system, and poor pavement conditions. Lawndale St is 13’ below the UPRR bridge deck. Standard clearance is 16'. The short clearance has resulted in regular occurrences of trucks crashing into the bridge deck, despite of advance warning signs to truck drivers. Lowering the street to achieve the standard clearance is currently cost prohibitive. The underpass is frequently flooded and thus not traversable. Improving the drainage, as part of lowering the street, is too costly. The roadway pavement requires regular repairs. Because of the water ponding problems, the repairs do not last long.
We anticipate minimal traffic impacts as traffic volume on Lawndale St is very low (less than 4000 vehicles per day), TX-225 feeder roads serve as convenient detour routes, and access for a few adjacent properties will remain open.
If the permanent closure is approved, HPW may still make some minor improvements to the underpass to maintain pedestrian/bicycle access and connectivity.
