We appreciate your support of the Abandonment of Bering and San Felipe Lift Stations project. The Contractor for this project states: The work along San Felipe St. is complete. The work along Fountain View Drive is complete. The work along Bering Drive is expected to take another six to seven weeks, with an estimated completion timeline of early April (Spring 2024). During this time, the newly installed piping system will undergo testing, and constituents can expect to see traffic control measures removed near the intersection of Bering and San Felipe in the coming weeks.

  • Share Hi. I would like to receive more detail about why the contractors are redoing a large amount of work that appeared previously done. The city update states ‘poor installation’ as the reason for redoing all of this. I have several questions about that. Is the contractor originally hired picking up the extra cost for fixing their bad work instead of the taxpayers? What was the cause of the poor installation and why was the poor installation not identified until almost all the work was done? I would expect oversight after the first installation section of work was completed instead of so late in the project. Lastly, is winter 2024 (Jan - March according to your website) still an accurate completion estimate? Anyone living on Bering could tell you the construction looks nowhere near complete. After several pushed-back completion dates you can understand why we are skeptical of that timeline. I hope you understand my concern as a resident who has been dealing with constant construction since I moved in 2.5 years ago and currently has a pile of rubble the size of a car in prime view of their living room. on Facebook Share Hi. We appreciate your inquiry about the ongoing Sanitary Sewer repairs on Bering Street, and we completely understand your concerns.

The contractor is indeed contractually obligated to rectify any subpar work at no additional cost to the City. The identification of deficiencies in the Sanitary Sewer relies on closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection, which was conducted after all work on Bering was completed. We acknowledge your skepticism, and we want to address the delay in the completion date.

The completion date was extended due to the need for necessary repairs. However, we assure you that the repairs are nearly complete. The contractor has initiated CCTV inspections on sections of the southern portion of the project, gaining a much clearer understanding of the outstanding work. We are working towards meeting the estimated completion date of Winter 2024.

Regarding the cause of the poor installation, we are currently investigating this matter. The original contractor is responsible for covering any extra costs associated with fixing the issues, ensuring that the residents and stakeholders are not burdened with additional expenses.

We understand the frustration caused by the construction process and the delays. Your skepticism is valid, and we are committed to addressing these concerns and completing the project as efficiently as possible.

If you have any further questions or need additional information, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

    Best regards,

  • Share This project was originally slated to be completed in Spring of 2023. We are now nearing Spring of 2024 and the project does not appear to be close to finished. What is the current % of completion on this project? I note that it was 80% complete in July 2023. Secondly, it keeps being restated that the contract does not include repaving Bering - only the “excavated parts”. Please know that the construction vehicles and large machinery have destroyed the non-excavated portions of the road to the point where there are potholes and broken concrete running the entire length of the street from Westheimer to San Felipe. At this point, the damage from construction is going to necessitate the repaving of the entire street. Howdy Neighbor!

The work on Bering Drive is approximately 75% complete, with an estimated completion date of late February/early March. Please note that between now and the completion date, the Contractor will repair the sewer lines, perform the required acceptance testing, tie in service lines, and perform the restoration.

At this time, the contract states that the Contractor is only responsible for restoring areas damaged by construction to their previous condition or better. This includes repaving parts of the excavated southbound lanes, repairing curbs and sidewalks, and replanting grass; with that said, I do not believe that repaving the northbound lanes on Bering is covered in the contract.

    Howdy Neighbor!

Regarding the water leak at 1900 Bering: The water leak was reported to the 311 for repairs. The City of Houston repaired the water line feeding 1900 Bering, which is no longer leaking. Regarding the pavement along Bering Drive: Unfortunately, the original contract for this project did not include replacing the pavement of Bering. The Contractor is only obligated to repair the excavated pavement to perform the work or repair the damage during construction. However, the team is aware of the condition of the road and is investigating potential solutions.

Howdy Neighbor! Thank You for your questions. The area of the curb in front of the 2400 Bering Townhomes that was removed, will be restored once the project is complete during Spring 2023. The blue pipe in the area of concern was placed to protect a temporary water valve and has now been trimmed to ground level to prevent any damage to vehicles. Thank You!

Will Bering Drive be repaved once the project is complete?

SolanaVP asked almost 2 years ago

Thank you for your question. The project scope does not include repaving Bering Drive as this is a sanitary sewer upgrade project.  The areas of the road impacted by construction will be restored back to their pre-existing condition.  This will include repaving in those specific areas.
